Getting Ready for a Shoot

Color Choice
Color Choice
COLOR vs. B&W: After years of using primarily B&W film with a 35mm camera, I have converted to digital. All of my photos are initially in color. However I can remove the color from any image to make it black and white, sepia-toned, or black and white with a bit of added spot color. The choice is yours.

CLOTHING & PROPS: It is best to keep it simple—solid colors work best. I try to avoid busy patterns, plaids, logos, etc. If the output will be black and white, solid colors work best. If you child has a special hobby or favorite sport, you may want to incorporate that theme into an individual portrait.

BACKGROUNDS: I will work with you to create the type of photograph that you want. Many clients have a special setting in which they would like to be photographed, like their own backyard, but if you don’t have such a place, together we can work to find one. I do have some portable backdrops that I can use if a “studio look” is desired.

LIGHTING: I prefer to use natural light, so depending on the setting, there is often a window of time in the late afternoon when the light is best for your portraits. I will work with you to try to determine the best time of day to shoot.

COMPUTER EDITING: I can digitally “fix” many imperfections in an image, and can make “enhancements” if necessary. I can’t take off 30 pounds, but I can fix a smile!

MODEL RELEASE: At the time of your consultation or sitting, I will ask you to sign a model release form which gives me the permission to use the photographs that I have taken of you or your family in my portfolio, on my website, on business materials, or in print advertising. Please let me know if you don’t want me to use the images I take on your shoot in this way.

PAYMENT: Payment for sitting fees should be made at the time of the sitting. Payment for final photographs is due upon delivery.

PROOFS: After the sitting, I will review the images and select the best ones to make into proofs. We will set a time to review these proofs together, and you can place an order at that time. I will let you take the proofs to show your spouse or family, but I ask that you respect my copyright on all photographs and not make scans or copies of the proofs.

Again, thank you for this opportunity!
